Astrid Emde writes "Mapbender Release 2.2.3 is available (2006-03-10)! Are you interested in WebGIS? Have you heard of the WMS Client Suite Mapbender? The Mapbender Client Suite is a framework for managing spatial data services. Mapbender does not contain any maps or map server software itself but it can display any existing interoperable services. Maps are stacked on top of each other and they can be distributed throughout the world. Mapbender integrates easily with any existing architecture and web site. Download the new Mapbender Version (This is the last download from sourceforge. The next will be from OSGeo). Find more about the changes about Mapbender 2.2.3 in the wiki." Read a lot more below.
Mapbender provides interfaces for displaying, navigating and querying OGC OWS services (e.g. WMS, WFS-T, GML,WMC). The Mapbender framework additionally provides interfaces for user and group administration and management functionality for accessing maps rendered and data served by OGC Open Web Services. The Mapbender data base model has been designed to implement multi-client capabilities with respect to users, groups, interfaces and services. The following three basic components make up Mapbender.

      1. Users and Groups
      2. User Interfaces (graphic user interface)
      3. Map Services (OGC Open Web Services)

Currently the focus of Development has shifted to WFS-T functionality, catalog and gazetteer services (check Modules for the current status). If you have any suggestions on what you are missing in Mapbender, have a look whether there are more users with the same idea in the Change Requests section.

Mapbender software covers the following topics:

        * Web-GIS Client (OGC WMS, WFS, Catalog Service Client)
        * Geo-CMS (Content Management System)
        * Web-based Digitizing/Editing Functionality (OGC WSF-T Client)
        * Meta Information System (ISO 19-hundred Series)
        * Catalog System (ISO 19119 Service Meta Data)
        * Security Management (Authentification, Authorization)
        * Accounting Management (Logging)

Please read the description of the installation in the Mapbender Wiki:

Open Source Geospatial Foundation writes "Seattle, Washington, USA, July 19 — The Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) announced today that Mapbender, a portal-based suite of software for geodata management using OGC OWS architectures, has met all of the legal and community requirements to become the first official product supported by the Foundation. Just six months after its inception, the Foundation is already starting to make an impact on the geospatial industry, providing a degree of quality assurance for open source geospatial software users and getting its message out to the GIS community at conferences and tradeshows." Industry: Mapbuilder Status Report [+]
Community Mapbuilder was never featured on Slashgeo and this status report on the OSGeo mailing list provide a great summary of what Mapbuilder is and where it's heading. From the post: " MapBuilder is a powerful, standards compliant and FREE geographic mapping client which runs in a web browser. It renders raster maps from WMS, Google Maps and more, and vector layers from WFS, GeoRSS and GML. It even offers feature editing to WFS-T. [...] Mapbuilder developers are now contributing to the OpenLayers codebase when adding core Mapping functionality. Merging code between projects is difficult emotionally as much as technically. The catalyst for the Mapbuilder/OpenLayers merge was that there were four different projects developing vector rendering using SVG/VML at the end of 2006. After much discussion we agreed to work together on the same code base." This webpage provides additional information on the strategic direction of Mapbuilder. Mapbuilder is an OSGeo project.
