The Cartography blog links to a Guardian article regarding the INSPIRE initiative and the free data debate. From the article: "Britain is threatening to kill at birth a project to simplify access to data crucial to the protection of Europe's land, air and water - unless it is modified to protect the interests of state-owned mapping agencies. [...] The implication is that Britain would be prepared to see the directive fall rather than compromise OS's [Ordnance Survey] commercial position." Directions Mag host an article named Why Europe Needs to Provide its Own Public Geodata. From the article: "The national mapping agencies (NMA) of Europe sometimes seem to be living in the colonial past. Public geodata are kept under lock and key, through copyright and commercial licensing terms that are prohibitive to ordinary citizens and spare-time, free-software enthusiasts who want to undertake amateur GIS projects." Vector One discuss the rejection by Europe of data charging within INSPIRE. From the blog: "A few days ago, the European Parliament voted ‘no’ on Amendment 15 - which pertains to the charging for data. [...] This IS a big deal for Europe and has been a long time in the works and some serious planning and directions will follow upon the final decision. [...] The charge / no-charge communities had better get their ducks lined up properly, with detailed information for the next round of voting which appears to be heading toward conciliation."

Ed Parsons, UK's Ordnance Survey's CTO, shares his impressions on the INSPIRE Day. From his blog: "A number of press releases including those from the Commission, the Finnish Presidency Website and the European Parliament all provide limited detail as to the final text of the INSPIRE directive, which was agreed late yesterday as a result of a formal conciliation process. [...] I would caution anyone reading too much into these early reports, the devil will be in the detail here.. and we should also not forget that INSPIRE is about a lot more than the licensing regime." Mikel Maron writes "The bill sponsored by Rep. Solorio, would close public access to public GIS basemap data.
The bill is currently set for a hearing in the Governmental Organization committee on April 16th, and in the Local Government Committee on April 30th. The best time to stop a bad bill is when it is in committee. So the time to act is now.
If you live in California, now is the time to contact your rep, and the members of the committee.
More info here and here." Some related stories copied below.
