Ogle Earth has an entry on a 3D webmapping tool coming in 2010 for Shanghai. Nothing really surprising, but the comments are really worthed, including the user comments. A part of the entry: "Wouldn't it be better if IGN and the Shanghai city government made their datasets available in an open format, viewable with a range of virtual globes? [...] You can bet your bottom dollar that this content will be censored, just as GéoPortail's is. [...] 2010 is far off. Google Earth already today lets you show 3D buildings, as does Microsoft Virtual Earth 3D."

The Geospatial Semantic Web Blog offers an interesting web mapping site of Shanghai. From the blog: "The truth is that I found an interesting Shanghai city map called eDuShi (in English: e-City). In addition to its use of Ajax technique, it’s implemented to display SimCity-like map features."

After some time inaccessible, we can now navigate on geoportail.fr. The Ogle Earth blog links to a UK Times review and provides corrections to the article. From the article: "The site, www.geoportail.fr, has been a runaway success, with its base of 400,000 aerial photographs covering the non-sensitive parts of the country, showing everything down to the size of a manhole cover. France’s overseas territories in the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific are also included."

The Map Room blog has an article covering this nice mapping application. From their summary : "It doesn’t work in Safari and the text is only in Chinese, but this eerily cartoon-like, three-dimensional map of Shanghai is still worth a look. (I think I just had a Sim City flashback.)"
