Ant Bryan writes "Metalink is a simple XML format that describes files to be downloaded. It lists multiple mirrors and checksums. Geospatial Semantic Web Blog reports: "not only multiple server information is described but also meta-data (e.g., the location of the server, document tags and license). Although this information is not in RDF, but it’s clear that it provides expressive description about file downloads." Downloads can be filtered by server location. Currently, location is described with 'location=xx', where xx is a 2 letter country code. Is there a better, yet still simple, way to represent location information that download programs will be able to use easily?" Metalink was recently discussed on Slashdot and read the excellent Wikipedia article. What does Slashgeo readers propose for this great new open format for geolocation? A simple lat-lon value? GeoURI?

geoURI Scheme: a URI for Geographic Locations [+]
There a new standard in the work for a Uniform Resource Identifier for geographic locations named geoURI. The published their IETF Internet Draft. They even already released a Firefox extension which supports geoURIs. From their website: "A dedicated Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) scheme for geographic locations would be independent from any protocol, usable by any software/data format that can handle generich URIs. Like a “mailto:” URI launches your favourite mail application today, a “geo:” URI could soon launch your favourite mapping service, or queue that location for a navigation device."
