The PerryGeo blog suggests an interesting discussion on whether web user interfaces will supplant desktop applications. The entry compares Microsoft Streets and Trips with Google Maps. From the entry: "It's a mixed-up, topsy-turvy world we live in when web mapping applications are now faster and more convenient to use than their desktop equivalents. [...] What's worse, Google maps is easier to use than Streets and Trips, too. [...] All the innovation in user interface seems to be taking place on the web, and desktop applications just aren't keeping up. Web applications are evolving online at a frenetic pace, while most desktop applications are mired in circa-1999 desktop user interface conventions, plopping out yearly releases with barely noticeable new features."

The Earth is Square offers a review of Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007. From the review: "The GPS unit is a Pharos 500 which has SiRF star III technology in it. This means it is really accurate. [...] All and all I am impressed with the software and the GPS unit. They work quite well together. And the GPS unit also works in World Wind with the GPS Plug-in. The only real gripes I have at this time is the lack of GPS monitoring ability and that the GPS turn-by-turn assistance won't help you if you get off your route. Other than saying "Off route" it will not help you get back on the route."
