The RFID Weblog links to 6 free lessons on RFID. From the site: "Learn the differences between LF, HF, UHF and Microwave. What are the different components of an RFID tag/transponder? What are the different types of Tags? What are the benefits and limitations of each frequency? What is EPC Generation 2 and is it applicable to my business application requirements? How do I make sure that the tag will be read when I want it to be read? What do I need to make a complete solution that works?" The same blog discuss protecting forests from illegal lumbering by embedding RFID tags in trees.

Application Domains: RFID for Forest Fires Alerts? [+]
All Points Blog links to a press release about arrays of RFID sensors for forest fire alerts. From the PR: "[...] it is the first real time early warning fire mapping solution available and it will reduce the impact and spread of bushfires on communities. [...] Telepathx patent pending active RFID sensors are truly innovative in the way they can remotely detect and notify of excessive ambient, convected or radiated heat for extended periods, up to 10-12 years in 24-7 real time without the need of maintenance or management. [...] Telepathx expects the systems will cost about $1500.00 USD per kilometre depending on sensor saturation."
Application Domains: Using Virtual Globes to Fight Forest logging [+]
The Google Earth Blog discuss and links a short Mercury News article on using Google Earth to fight forest logging. From the article: "When Moore showed the flyover on a big screen to neighbors who packed a community meeting, it had a huge impact, showing how large the logging area is and how close to schools and homes. ``I essentially flew everyone up the Los Gatos Creek canyon,'' she told me. ``It just electrified the room.''"
LIDAR Deployed to Help Save Forests [+]
GeoCarta shares a story about researchers using LIDAR data to map forest and help 'save it'. From the blog: "The red oak borer, lived in relative obscurity in red oak trees in the Ozark Mountains until 1999. Then foresters began noticing oaks dying in droves. When Professor Stephen and his students examined the trees, they found them filled with borers. In 2005, the red oak borer population fell back to normal levels. Researchers are trying to understand why the sudden infestation happened, and to keep it from happening again. “GIS and remote sensing can help find a pattern, and this can help us understand the underlying science of the ecosystem,” Dr. Tullis said."
RFID Supply Chain Security and Architecture [+]
RFID news generally includes a security component. Vector One shortly discuss a paper about the RFID supply chain security and architecture. Here's the direct link to the "Security analysis report" paper [91 pages pdf, 967k]. From Vector One: "There are different types of RFID tags which can be used for different purposes and by different people. Do you want just anyone with a RFID reader to access your product details, parts or production? Not likely. Like all data, RFID technology implementation needs planning."
