Spatially Adjusted discuss the just released Manifold 8.00 GIS software. Here's the Manifold official site and the what's new page for 8.00. From the What's new page: "Manifold System Release 8 introduces next-generation performance infrastructure for Manifold System products with faster rendering, extended spatial DBMS support and introduction of massively parallel processing for supercomputer performance in surface transforms. This new infrastructure enables hundreds of improvements in Release 8 and will provide the foundation for thousands of improvements in future updates and releases." Manifold version 7 is here
[+]
redgeographics writes "On May 15th, Manifold GIS version 7 was released. There's a wide range of new features, but the most interesting ones are improved support for enterprise database such as Oracle, KML export, dual processor/dualcore processor support and the option to dynamically link to images from Google Maps, Yahoo Maps and MS Virtual Earth. This new link option is used in Manifold projects that act as a basemap for the US (offered by Manifold) and Europe (offered by Red Geographics). Aside from the changes in the software itself, there has also been a few changes in the product line itself and the version 7 DVD now comes with a lot of additional data and tools (some of which used to be commercial products, such as Database Commander)."
Common GIS Tasks in Manifold and ArcGIS Compared
[+]
The Dot Net Without a Net blog links to a Cornell 124-pages pdf [4.3 megs] document comparing common GIS tasks in Manifold and ArcGIS. Versions of both compared software are not the current ones. The document includes numerous screenshots. From the introduction: "Therefore, this document attempts to illustrate the GIS processes listed in the USGS document using two popular GIS software systems: ArcGIS 8.3 and Manifold 6.0. While the document does illustrate the steps required to complete the classic GIS tasks in a side-by-side format, it is not meant to be a comparison or an endorsement of either product (they just happen to be the two most popular products in our lab). Rather, it is meant to act as a cheat-sheet for GIS professionals needing some direction in performing classic GIS functions."
