In a demonstration of how quickly maps can be put on the web, the official Google Lat Long blog informs us on the San Diego fires and its fire map from KPBS which provide useful information for people in the area. The Google Earth Blog show us how to overlay the smoke plumes in Google Earth using MODIS and GOES data, here's more and even a time animation which illustrates the spread of the fire. From the Lat Long blog: "[...] KPBS Online created a fire map that includes up-to-date news on the spread of the fire and shows the location of evacuated areas, Red Cross evacuation centers, and closed highways. They are also providing live radio coverage of the fire."

mlucas17 writes "Open Source Software Image Map (OSSIM) is being used by the CSIR in South Africa to identify and locate forest fires. Frederic Claudel, an image processing researcher based at the Meraka Institute, worked on the project to port the once-proprietary mapping system to open source. The Advanced Fire Information System detects fires by analysing small changes to satellite images using complex algorithms. "Whenever the satellite takes an image, it will look for specific brightnesses ... and look for anomalies," says Claudel."

Application Domains: Lack of Satellite Imagery to Blame for Forest Fires in Greece [+]
All Points Blog links to a The Economist article on the lack of satellite imagery to blame for the forest fires in Greece. From the article: "[...] the conflagration [which occured two years ago] prompted the Greek prime minister to promise stricter measures to stop developers from building on land cleared by fires; satellite photos, for example, would be taken at regular intervals to help enforce Greece's law banning construction in forest areas. Mr Karamanlis failed to deliver. This week the emergency services struggled to contain the worst forest fires in Greece for more than a century, which have killed more than 60 people. Forestry officials say the firefighters' work was hampered by the lack of satellite imagery." Several sites showed satellite images of the burning.
Google Maps Iowa Caucus Results and Info [+]
The Google LatLong Blog announces a Google Maps page for 2008 Iowa caucus results and info. They describe,

"The map displays live news and events from across the state, and beginning tonight, both the Democratic and Republican parties of Iowa will be partnering with us to present real-time caucus results by county and by party."

Go straight to the map here.

KPBS's 2007 San Diego fires map was extremely useful and widely used to deliver/consume constantly updating news where location was very relevant, especially to locals. Is this a good way to deliver this kind of dynamic data (ie. news updates)? Or will the map go back to being the afterthought that's linked to or hiding in a tiny sidebar?
