SADA Software: Spatial Analysis and Decision Assistance

An AGISRS discussion made me aware of SADA (Spatial Analysis and Decision Assistance), a free GIS software with a focus on environmental data analysis and decision support. From the quick overview: "Spatial Analysis and Decision Assistance (SADA) is free software that incorporates tools from environmental assessment fields into an effective problem solving environment. These tools include integrated modules for visualization, geospatial analysis, statistical analysis, human health risk assessment, ecological risk assessment, cost/benefit analysis, sampling design, and decision analysis. The capabilities of SADA can be used independently or collectively to address site specific concerns when characterizing a contaminated site, assessing risk, determining the location of future samples, and when designing remedial action." This project from the University of Tennessee appear in active development.

    I've used this tool a number of times as an environmental professional and I find it to be quite helpful in some cases.

    Please bear in mind that this is software has many "expert modules". The 2d and 3d interpolation (kriging, inverse-distance, etc.) and Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment modules require expert knowledge to use and interpret.

    Whether you're an environmental consultant, regulator, or educator, I also suggest looking at Visual Sample Plan (VSP) from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory:

    VSP provides statistical solutions to sampling design, world-class mathematical and statistical algorithms, and a user-friendly visual interface, while answering two important questions in sample planning.

    * How many samples are needed?

    The algorithms involved in determining the number of samples needed can be quite involved and intimidating to the non-expert. VSP can quickly calculate the number of samples needed for various scenarios at different costs.

    * Where should the samples be taken?

    VSP instantly provides random or gridded sampling locations overlaid on a user input site map to achieve the desired objective.

    VSP will help you make statistically defensible decisions by quantifying the confidence in your results.
