In a followup of the early February story about the world map of undersea Internet connections, Slashdot discussed earlier this week the satellite identification of ships that cut cables. Their summary: "Undersea telecom cable operator Reliance Globalcom was able to use satellite images to identify two ships that dropped anchor in the wrong place, damaging submarine cables and knocking Middle East nations offline in early February. The company used satellite images to study the movements of the two ships, and shared the information with officials in Dubai, who impounded the two vessels. The NANOG list has a discussion of where Reliance might have obtained satellite images to provide that level of detail. Google News links more coverage of the developments."

Tinfoil Hat: Of course this is all just made up to hide the fact that the USS Jimmy Carter was the one that cut the cables, probably unintentionally, as it attempted to tap the lines. Was it just a coincidence that the Jimmy Carter's mission was deep sea cable work and it launched just a couple of months before the cables were "cut"? End Tinfoil Hat Great use of imaging satellites! I, for one, welcome our new orbital overlords!
