First country to be fully mapped in 3D

It appears that ~2.5 million buildings in Denmark are modeled in 3D. This claims to be the whole country and also the first to do so. From the Sharp GIS blog : "The modeling is mostly based on LIDAR data. I’ve seen several attempts to do this, but they have always resulted in either ugly or oversimplified buildings with flat roofs, or even worse made up of so many redundant points that no PC were able to show more than a few buildings at a time. This is the first fully automated attempt I’ve seen that comes out with a convincing result, and the scale of this is breathtaking. Considering they also have full terrain and surface model coverage, full high resolution ortho imagery coverage and lots of Pictometry (Birds Eye) imagery they can drape onto the facades, this makes for an impressive 3D model."

GIS in China and City8: New Chinese 3D Street Map Service [+]
The Geopatial Semantic Web Blog shows a 3D street map service for China: "Unfortunately, this [Google street view] service is only available for major cities in the US. [...] City8.com is Chinese web map service that shows street level photographs of major Chinese cities. The site also features some social web functions. Users can vote on popular city locations and recommend places to eat, shop and play." In addition to previous related stories below, the GeoCarta blog links to a recent article saying: " China's geographic information industry has registered 400 billion yuan in aggregate output value last year and hired more than 300,000 people, according to Zhong Ershun, deputy president of the China Association for Geographic Information System."
3D Urban and City Modeling 3 comments [+]
Monique Romeijn writes "The increased availability of high-resolution satellite images and aerial photography in support of 3D modeling with detailed terrain surface elevation models assists urban planners and municipal managers to create a model and visualize the urban space in three dimensions. http://news.satimagingcorp.com/wp-content/uploads/ 2007/12/12-buildingsl_orthophotos.jpg 3D Urban and City Modeling Image Credits: University of Texas at Dallas To view a 3D fly through video: http://www.satimagingcorp.com/gallery/quicktime-no rth-korea.html 3D visualization models have a variety of applications in geography and urban studies. Accurate cartographic feature extraction, map updating, digital city models and 3D city models in urban areas are essential for many applications, such as military operations, disaster management, mapping of buildings and their heights, simulation of new buildings, updating and keeping cadastral databases current, change detection and virtual reality. While they are generally used to simply visualize the built environment, there are early signs of them being used as 3D interfaces to more sophisticated simulation models. http://news.satimagingcorp.com/wp-content/uploads/ 2007/12/lidar-harris-county-texas2.jpg 15cm LiDAR Digital Elevation Model (DEM) — Harris County, Texas USA Just a few years ago, the main input data for the production of digital city models and 3D city models were aerial images, terrestrial images, map data, and data derived from classical surveying. The process of geospatial information extraction from these sources was performed manually, but today with the availability of high-resolution Satellite sensors, satellite images can support the generation of a three-dimensional dense, geo-referenced terrain surface. 3D models can be used as a user-friendly interface for querying the urban environment as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS), for hyper-linking Web-based information, for visualizing model results, and for accessing functional simulation models. 3D terrain modeling and visualization application requires good detail pertaining to the terrain features and terrain slopes for critical project decisions, an accurate digital terrain model (DTM) and a digital surface model (DSM) must be available. Satellite Imaging Corporation(SIC) can provide customers with 5m digital surface models (DSMs), 2m digital elevation models (DEMs), and a detailed, orthorectified satellite image mosaic at 0.8m resolution. Our company can produce clear, captivating simulated views of almost any location from high resolution satellite sensors and aircraft imaging data. Ludvig Emgard writes "On 29th of May 2008 the Swedish yellow pages provider www.hitta.se released a 3D city model covering 200 square kilometers of Stockholm. The 3D city model, provided by C3 Technologies is produced automatically from aerial photos and is considered to "outperform Google Earth" by the following Swedish national newspapers: Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet, Ny Teknik, Computer Sweden, Metro Teknik."
Heidelberg-3D - Interactive 3D City Mapping Based on OGC Standards 2 comments [+]
The GIS Lounge has a pretty detailed article up with a couple of pics. Head on over there for the full scoop. Here is part of their summary : "Recently a first version of the interactive 3D city information system Heidelberg-3D.de was made available online. It can be used freely by anybody. The core of the system is one of the first implementations of the OpenGIS Web 3D Service (OGC W3DS) discussion paper. The system comes with a free 3D-Client called . This client is a Java WebStart-Application and will be installed automatically if you follow the respective URL and if Java 6 is already installed on the computer."
