The Applied-GIS-RS list informs us of the public access of high-resolution airborne laser swath mapping data acquired by NCALM for NSF sponsored research projects, via a KML file. From the site: "This site provides public access to high-resolution airborne laser swath mapping data (ALSM) acquired by NCALM for NSF sponsored research projects. You can visualize the location of the available projects and download data files using a Google Earth interface. The interface also provides on the fly, multi-resolution shaded relief overlays for the LIDAR DEM that can be used to preview the data and see the accurate extent of the dataset. The Google Earth KML file can be used off-line to browse project locations and meta-data (Internet connection required for the overlays)." See also our LIDAR section.

Very Spatial tells us about the USGS announcement of Center for LIDAR Information Coordination and Knowledge (CLICK). From the CLICK website: "[...] research on using the entire point cloud of this remote sensing data for scientific applications have been slowed by: - The high cost of collecting lidar. - A steep learning curve on research and understanding involving utilizing the entire point cloud. The goal of CLICK is to facilitate data access, user coordination and education of lidar remote sensing for scientific needs." GIS User blog also tells us about new lidarexchange.com website.
LIDAR Data Processing with Open Source Tools [+]
The PerryGeo blog has a nice discussion about LIDAR data processing with open source tools. From the blog: "Beyond the sheer size of the datasets and the knowledge and hardware required to process them, software is a big issue. [...] So dusting off my notes about parsing binary files in python, I set out to create a python module for extracting LIDAR data from LAS files. The LAS format contains a header which needs to be parsed first in order to read the point cloud."
