News Office. gvSIG Project writes "The 5th Edition of the gvSIG Conference, organized by the Regional Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (CIT), will be held from December 2nd until December 4th at the Feria Valencia Convention and Exhibition Center, and will once again host the eclipseDay.
In these difficult times when collaboration is most important, we cope with the adversities together with the aim of coming out strengthened by them. We continue moving ahead together. This is part of the gvSIG project and through this approach we keep on growing. This is our slogan for the fifth edition of the gvSIG Conference: We keep growing.
The call for papers for the Fifth Edition of the gvSIG conference is now open. As of today communication proposals can be sent to the email address: contacto-jornadas-gvsig@gva.es; they will be evaluated by the scientific committee as to their inclusion in the conference program.
There are two types of communication: paper or poster. Information regarding to regulations on communication presentations can be found in the report's section. Abstracts will be accepted until September 21st .
Organizations interested in collaborating in the event can find information in the section: How to collaborate?"

Industry: gvSIG Update Version 1.1.1 and 3D Pilot Extension
[+]
Alvaro Anguix writes "gvSIG 1.1.1, a partial update of gvSIG 1.1, is now available for download in which some problems detected by our users have been fixed, so it is possible to working normally with the application.
As usual, it can be downloaded from the Download section of the web page.
The problems fixed in this distribution can be checked from the Release Notes Section and to install the partial update you must have gvSIG 1.1 correctly installed.
On the other hand, the pilot application awarded the development contract for the 3D Extension by the Regional Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is available too. It allows the creation of 3D Views, XYZ-projected as well as spherical (planetary), where local and remote data sources can be loaded as layers, and displayed using most of the options available in 2D like transparency, labeling, legends, etc.
It's available in the Extensions section of the web page and to install this extension you must have correctly installed gvSIG 1.1.1 version." I copied below several previous stories on the open source GIS gvSIG.
Industry: gvSIG Community
[+]
Alvaro Anguix writes "Hello everyone
This mail is being sent to several lists, so I apologize for those who receive multiple copies.
We intend to put in place an infrastructure that allows collaboration on a speedy, direct and open way with gvSIG.
We are at the beginning of this work, but we prefer to announce it and start realeasing what we are doing, better than waiting to have “the Cathedral”.
You can visit https://gvsig.org/ to see what we are having prepared. In the Documentation section, you will find documentation for users and on-line developers.
At the same time, two of the issues on which we are taking into account the Community as much as possible, are testing and translations tasks.
All of you interested in testing should contact Manual Madrid indicating in which areas of gvSIG you would like to help as testers, if you are a single tester or a coordinator of a testing group, and all those things that might occur to you.
With regard to the translations, the coordinator is Mario Carrera . We know that several groups of translators are being organized in different places like Germany and Italy. We have great interest in having the highest quality in english translations, as a base from which extend gvSIG to other linguistic communities. Of course, this is applying not only to the gvSIG interface but to the documentation in general.
That's why, on the issue of translation into English, we would like to have translators and supervisors, that are mostly specialists in Geomatics and english native-tongued.
Finally, a few days ago we were in the 2^nd Meeting in Open GIS Software in Girona. We congratulate the organizers and greet all the people with whom we had the opportunity to share a few days very rewarding, both professionally and personally.
Wish the Meetings of Girona become an unmissable event every year.
Sincerely, Gabi"

Industry: ESRI Refuses Conference Access to Open Source Companies 2 comments
[+]
It may be sensationalism, but strange nonetheless. From the ESRI Spain conference incident thread, writen by one Spanish company employee supporting gvSIG: "Ok, some coworkers of him went to Madrid few days
ago to attend the Annual ESRI Users Conference. Because IVER has
customers that use ESRI technology they, as every year, wanted to know
the latest "arc-news". Obviously they registered previously and they
were confirmed by the organization.
Well, when they tried to register at the beginning of the conference,
the Marketing Director invited them to abandon the conference. Even
more, the Managing Director of ESRI Spain insisted one of the IVER
people that "to talk with customers, better she should go to a café or
on the street". Quite annoying and bizarre!" You can read the whole thread to learn more about reactions and also look at the original entry in Spanish.
Industry: gvSIG Mobile Ported to Openmoko
[+]
iknowjoseph writes "Juan Lucas Domínguez Rubio has announced the release of gvSIG Mobile for Openmoko; the first time the software has been made available for handhelds not based on Windows Mobile:
Screenshots, link to the source, installation instructions etc available from Juan Lucas' blog." We mentioned Openmoko before and gvSIG plenty of times. This is an interesting step for mobile (e.g. on phones) open source GIS.Features include:
Browsing Spherical Mercator remote tile services (OpenStreetMap layers and Yahoo Maps Satellite layer).
Easily configurable access to standard WMS servers (version 1.1.1). The application applies a tile approach.
Support for the vector data file de facto standard (ESRI shapefile, *.shp).
Access to GPS device via Gpsd. A rotating arrow shows on the map indicating position and heading. Coordinates are also shown.
gvSIG: Translation Management Extension is Now Available
[+]
gvSIG project News Office writes "The extension to easily manage the user interface over a gvSIG installation, allowing for the translation to new languages without having to install a new version of gvSIG is now available. It also allows updating or to complete languages already installed, and facilitates the translation to new languages using some of the ones already installed as a reference by exporting the necessary files, as well as the uninstalling of a language translation.
It is available in the Extensions section of the web page.
New languages are included too, as well as updates of some languages already included in gvSIG, to be loaded with this extension in gvSIG 1.1.2. Languages can be downloaded from here, where is the explanation about how to load them in gvSIG too.
Advice: To install this extension you must have correctly installed gvSIG 1.1.2 version."
