Found on cnet news : "Twelve days after it launched WorldView-2 into orbit, DigitalGlobe has released its first images from the satellite, which will supply high-resolution photography for Google's and Microsoft's online mapping services.
The first images are of two locations in San Antonio, Texas, where the company is showing off its work at the GeoInt 2009 Symposium this week, and of Dallas Love Airport.
The quality of the images should improve over these first shots, taken Monday. "More refinements to early-stage images can be expected as the ongoing check-out and calibration continues," DigitaGlobe said."

Currently in discussion on slashdot : "Researchers have used NASA's Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite to compose the most comprehensive picture of changing glaciers along the coast of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. The new elevation maps show that all latitudes of the Greenland ice sheet are affected by dynamic thinning — the loss of ice due to accelerated ice flow to the ocean. The maps also show surprising, extensive thinning in Antarctica, affecting the ice sheet far inland. The study, led by Hamish Pritchard of the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge, England, was published September 24 in Nature."
WorldView-2 Launched Successfully

Several geoblogs mentioned that DigitalGlobe successfully launched WorldView-2.
From SS: WorldView-2 will provide the highest resolution commercial satellite imagery available at 46 cm panchromatic. The satellite will also offer the most spectral bands from a commercial satellite with four standard colors (red, blue, green, near-IR) and four additional colors (red edge, coastal, yellow, near-IR2). The satellite also includes high-precision attitude sensors and GPS for what is billed as the highest geolocation accuracy yet available with predicted performance in the range of 4.6 to 10.7 meters.

Europe Launches Flood-Predicting Satellite and Test Probe

Currently in discussion on slashdot : "MikeChino writes to mention that the European Space Agency has launched a pair of satellites, one that will pinpoint accurately the future location and intensity of floods and droughts, and the other aimed at testing new tech. Launched on a Russian rocket launcher from the Plesestk cosmodrome, the SMOS probe will measure soil moisture, plant growth, and ocean salt levels across the globe. The measurements gathered by the SMOS probe can be used to track ocean circulation patterns and soil moisture — data that can be used to predict quickly drought and flood risk in certain areas, as well as the intricacies of the planet's climate cycle. The other satellite, a smaller demonstration probe dubbed Proba 2, will test 17 new technologies ranging from a new wide-angle view camera to a xenon-fed resistojet thruster."
